State of the University Address, Sept. 23
The university community is invited to join Kent State University President Lester A. Lefton on Thursday, Sept. 23, at 4 p.m. for his fourth annual State of the University address. The speech will be given in the Kent Student Center Kiva.

In keeping with tradition, the president will review progress made toward the university's excellence agenda and look to opportunities and challenges in the coming year.
A reception will follow in Room 204 of the Kent Student Center.

Bowman Breakfast Spotlights Intercollegiate Athletics

Doors open at 7 a.m. Breakfast begins at 7:30 a.m., and the speech starts at 8 a.m.
The Bowman Breakfast, a tradition since 1963, is sponsored by Kent State and the Kent Area Chamber of Commerce. The breakfast provides students, staff, faculty and members of the community with a forum to address important issues and topics.

Board of Trustees Meeting to be Held This Week
The Kent State University Board of Trustees will hold its next regular business meeting Wednesday, Sept. 15. The meeting will be held at the Kent State University Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative at its new location at 1309 Euclid Ave.
The Board will convene at 3 p.m. in the Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative Board Room. Board committees will meet as follows:
- Audit and Finance committees: 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in the classroom.
- Academic Excellence and Student Success Committee: 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in the Board Room.
- Committee of the Whole: 1:45 p.m.-2:45 p.m. in the Board Room.
Trustees are expected to retire into executive session at about 9:30 a.m. to consider specific topics as provided for under Ohio's Sunshine Law.
Kent State University Lester A. Lefton and Board Vice Chair Jacqueline Woods will be available to answer media questions immediately after the meeting.

Make Homecoming Parade Plans Now
The Kent State University Homecoming Committee cordially invites the university community to participate in the Alumni Continental Breakfast and Parade viewing event on Saturday, Oct 9.
Watching the parade is as much fun as marching in it.
Homecoming is a tradition that draws students, alumni, faculty, staff and community members to the university each year. This year, the Alumni Association will host a continental breakfast and parade watch for our alumni and friends on the lawn of the Williamson Alumni Center at 9 a.m. Please consider joining us, hosting a table and celebrating Homecoming 2010 in style!

Sign up to be in the Homecoming "Flashback to the Future" Parade
This year's parade theme is Flashback to the Future. Each entrant is responsible for securing their own parade mobility, whether by foot or vehicle. Signs and/or banners are also the responsibility of the entrant. You may bring your own or the university can make signs for you (see entry form for details). Parade entries are welcome to pass out your organization's promotional items and/or candy to the parade spectators, both children and adults.
The parade will step-off at 10 a.m. from the Kent State University campus and will proceed west on Main Street. The parade will conclude at approximately 11:30 a.m. at the intersection of Main Street and Franklin Avenue in downtown Kent.
All entries must be postmarked by Friday, Sept. 17 for consideration of acceptance into the Homecoming Parade. Your entry will be confirmed upon receipt of your registration form. Parade registration, staging and disbanding location, map and additional information will be sent to the entry's contact person by Oct. 2.

Industry Leaders on the Agenda for Media Ethics Workshop
"Digital Doers" from legacy media, new media and newsgathering organizations in between will dig deep into ethics issues relating to innovation at the annual Poynter Kent State Media Ethics Workshop titled, "Next Ethics?"

This sixth annual conference will feature speakers Arianna Huffington, co-founder and editor-in-chief of the Huffington Post; Adrian Holovaty, founder and editor of Everyblock.com; Paul Steiger, editor of ProPublica; and Michael Cherenson, immediate past president and CEO of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA). Additional guests and panelists will be announced soon.
The Workshop will take place Thursday, Sept. 16, in Franklin Hall, home of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. The event will be available to viewers via live stream on the Web and on mobile devices. All participants can contribute to the workshop discussions and ask questions of speakers via Twitter.
The cost of the workshop is $25 for media and public relations professionals, $15 for educators and free for students

College of Education, Health and Human Services Announces 2010 Hall of Fame Winners
As part of Kent State University's 2010 Homecoming festivities, the College of Education, Health and Human Services will honor eight distinguished alumni at its inaugural Hall of Fame Award Ceremony on Friday, Oct. 8, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Kent Student Center ballroom.
Tickets for the event are $35 per person and include hors d'oeuvres, followed by a sit-down meal.
The first class in the College of Education, Health and Human Services Hall of Fame includes:
Centennial Alumni Award
Dr. Fay Biles, '56
Biles was the first female vice president of an Ohio university, serving Kent State from 1972 -78. She also is a member of the Ohio Women's Hall of Fame, and is nationally and internationally known for her work and research in the field of human resource development.
Distinguished Alumni Award
Dr. William Herbert, '67, '69, '71
Serving as a Virginia Tech University full-time faculty member for 37 years until retirement in 2008, Herbert established the first exercise physiology laboratory on that campus and developed the curriculum for the program. He has published more than 120 scientific journal articles, book chapters, monographs and other edited works.
Dr. Thomas Hohenshil, '65, '68, '71
Hohenshil served at Virginia Tech University for more than 30 years as a leading counselor and education and school psychology faculty member. He was awarded numerous teaching honors, has written more than 125 refereed articles, book chapters, and essays and secured significant research funding.
Recent Alumni Award
Dave Herpy, '01
Presently serving as outdoor adventure and camp coordinator for the Department of Recreational Services, Herpy received the Administrator of the Year Award in 2007-08 at Kent State. He also received a 2010 President's Excellence Award.
Diversity Alumni Award
The Rev. Dr. Ron Fowler, '59
Fowler taught in the Detroit Public Schools from 1959-63 and was the senior pastor at the Arlington Church of God in Akron with more than 1,200 members. Currently, he consults and offers assistance on such Kent State projects as advancing the university's relationships with the Akron and Cleveland public schools, improving the recruitment and retention of diverse background students, mentoring students, working with alumni and the Pan-African Faculty and Staff Association, as well as assisting with bringing major gifts to the university.
International Alumni Award
Dr. Issaou Gado, '04
Gado, director of the National Institute of Research and Teachers Training, came to Kent State as a science teacher from Benin, West Africa, to complete the requirements as a post-doctoral student in evaluation and measurement. He is considered the leading chemistry and physics author in Africa and co-authors many books with fellow alumnus, Rapheal Kalani.
Distinguished Service to EHHS
Rae Mandel, '56
Mandel retired from career of teaching kindergarten in Perry Local School 10 years ago and continues to give back to Kent State and her community through charity, volunteering and advocacy efforts. She has made lifetime gifts and pledges to the university in excess of $250,000, including a Medallion Scholarship for the college.
Alumni Leadership Award
Dr. Judy Genshaft '73
Genshaft authored or co-authored 69 journal articles and three books. She is the past provost and vice president for academic affairs at the University of Albany. Currently, she is president of the University of South Florida System, which has been nationally recognized as a top-tier national research university, serving more than 47,000 students.
"We value our alumni and feel that it is important to recognize those who have committed their lives to serving others and making the world a better place," says College of Education, Health and Human Services Dean Daniel F. Mahony. "This year's eight alumni embody the values and mission of our college and their accomplishments are truly significant. We hope to continue this tradition of honoring alumni as part of Kent State's Homecoming festivities for many years to come."

Chopin Competition Winner to Perform at Kent State
The Hugh A. Glauser School of Music hosts pianist Sun-A Park, winner of the 61st KosciuszkoFoundation Chopin Competition on Friday,Sept. 17, 2010 at 8 p.m. in Ludwig Recital Hall located in the Music and Speech Building.

Park is rapidly establishing herself as one of the most outstanding young pianists of her generation. She made her orchestral debut at the age of 12, performing Shostakovich's First Concerto with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra. Since then, she has appeared frequently as a soloist with several orchestras including the Albany Symphony Orchestra, American Academy of Conducting Orchestra at Aspen, Juilliard Orchestra, Newark Symphony, Orchestra Sinfonica del Festival di Chioggia and the New Amsterdam Symphony Orchestra.
Park has received international recognition in several competitions: first prizes at the 2010 Schmidbauer International Piano Competition, Pacific International Piano Competition, and as a prizewinner in the California International Young Artists Competition and the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition.
Admission is $5 for students and seniors and $12 for adults. Tickets are available at the door; cash or checks are the only forms of payment accepted.

Kent State Announces Fall Schedule of Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Training and Certification Programs
Kent State University has announced the fall 2010 schedule for Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Training and Certification programs. Lean Six Sigma tools can be used in companies to eliminate waste, reduce variation in processes and eliminate defects. Lean Six Sigma is a business methodology that teaches organizations a new way to think about everyday work. It is a purposeful elimination of wasteful activities and can be deployed in every aspect of any organization. Lean Six Sigma includes a set of statistical tools to give practitioners data to make sound business decisions.

Cloud 9 to be Presented by School of Theatre and Dance in October
Kent State University's School of Theatre and Dance kicks off its 2010-11 season with Caryl Churchill's gender-bending comedy about sexual identity, Cloud 9. The production runs from Oct. 8-17 in Wright-Curtis Theatre in the Music and Speech Building.
Churchill's play, first produced in London in 1979, is a landmark in its exploration of sex, race and the changing face of the family. Act 1, set in Africa in 1880, is a spoof of colonialist attitudes and Victorian hang-ups. The second act, set in England in 1980, is a more serious take on the fallout of the sexual revolution. Both feature the same family members who, in a bit of theatrical magic, have aged only 25 years between acts. That's not the only trick Churchill plays: she also requires the actors to swap sex and race.
"It is a play about identity and the roles we are given in life - i.e. sexless mother, all-providing father, dutiful child and faithful servant," says Eric van Baars, director and associate professor of theatre. "Sexual repression is also a big theme. I have plans to play with the visualization of sexual repression on the architecture of the characters."
Playwright Caryl Churchill, born in London on Sept. 3, 1938, is an English dramatist known for her use of non-naturalistic techniques and feminist themes. She is acknowledged as a major playwright in the English language and a leading woman writer. Her early work developed German playwright Bertolt Brecht's modernist dramatic and theatrical techniques of 'Epic Theatre' to explore issues around gender and sexuality. From A Mouthful of Birds (1986) onward, she began to experiment with forms of dance-theatre, incorporating techniques developed from the performance tradition initiated by French playwright Antonin Artaud with his 'Theatre of Cruelty.' This move away from a clear Fabel dramaturgy towards increasingly fragmented and surrealistic narratives characterizes her work as postmodernist.
Shows are presented Tuesday through Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. The box office is open weekdays from noon to 5 p.m. and one hour prior to curtain. Tickets are $8 for students, $12 for faculty, staff, senior citizens and Alumni Association members, and $16 for adults. Groups of 10 or more are $7 per person.
