Kent State’s Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative to Host Cuba Discussion

Miguel Coyula, an expert in architecture and urban planning,
and a retired professor at the University of Havana in Cuba,
will speak about Cuba’s dynamic history and future at an
event hosted by Kent State University's Cleveland Urban
Design Collaborative on June 25.

Kent State University's Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative will host an evening discussion about Cuba’s dynamic history and future at its location at 1309 Euclid Ave., Suite 200, in Cleveland.

The event, “Havana: Past, Present, Future,” will take place Thursday, June 25, at 5 p.m. and feature guest speaker Miguel Coyula. Coyula is an expert in architecture and urban planning, and is a retired professor at the University of Havana in Cuba.

The event is free and open to the public, courtesy of Kent State President Emeritus Lester A. Lefton, but registration is required.

Coyula will present a comprehensive overview of Havana’s history and conclude his lecture with a discussion about the future of Havana and what the city could become in coming years. A light dinner featuring American cuisine with a Cuban flair will follow Coyula’s talk.

Kent State Golden Flashes Football Schedule Announced

Kent State University season tickets and Family 4-Packs

go on sale July 15.

The Mid-American Conference has announced an updated version of the 2015 football schedule with additional kick times and television. Five of Kent State University’s games have been given kick times, while all remaining times and television will be announced 12 days prior to the scheduled games.

The Golden Flashes open their season Friday, Sept. 4, at Illinois with a 9 p.m. (Eastern) kickoff on Big Ten Network.

Kent State’s home opener on Parents’ Day will be Saturday, Sept. 12, against Delaware State. The 6 p.m. start can be seen on ESPN3.

Three of the Golden Flashes’ midweek games in November also will get national exposure. On Thursday, Nov. 5, Dix Stadium will play host to a MAC East battle with Buffalo at 7:30 p.m., which will be shown on either CBS Sports Network or ESPN 3. Five days later (Tuesday, Nov. 10), Kent State will be in Athens, taking on Ohio at 8 p.m., on either ESPN2 or ESPNU.

On Wednesday, Oct. 18, Kent State will close out its six-game home slate against Central Michigan with an 8 p.m. kick on either ESPN2 or ESPNU.

October games against Miami, Toledo and UMass are all part of the MAC’s 12-day TV selection option.

The 19th Marathon MAC Football Championship game will be Friday, Dec. 4, at 8 p.m., at Ford Field in Detroit on ESPN2.

The MAC bowl schedule begins Saturday, Dec. 19, with the Raycom Media Camellia Bowl. The conference has agreements with five bowls and a secondary agreement with the Poinsettia Bowl, backing up Army.

Kent State University Bookstore Hosts Mad Addie Book Signing on June 26

The Kent State University Bookstore will host Professor Sydney J. Krause for the signing of his first novel Mad Addie, a spicy coming-of-age story that follows our heroine from naïve yet magnetic nursery school teacher to dynamic icon and mafia adversary. Through love, loss and limelight, this book will keep you reading until the end.

Krause is an Emeritus Professor of English at Kent State and has taught for 43 years. He has published more than 40 articles in major scholarly journals, a book about Warren Harding and he also served in World War II at the Battle of the Bulge. His new book signing will take place in the bookstore on June 26 from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.

Kent Heritage Festival Celebrates 20 Years

The annual Kent Heritage Festival will take place July 4
from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. in downtown Kent.

The city of Kent will again celebrate our nation’s independence at the 20th Annual Kent Heritage Festival on Saturday, July 4. This annual, all-day celebration held in downtown Kent runs from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. This year’s event will include live music and entertainment – much of which is local – all day on three stages located throughout downtown Kent. The AMETEK Tree City 5K for United Way will start at 7 p.m. on the Lefton Esplanade. There will be a children’s play area, a variety of food and craft booths and many more local displays. The family-friendly event, which is free and open to the public, concludes with a fireworks display.

The NAPA Car Show will be located on West Erie and North on Franklin streets this year. Interested car owners who would like to participate are encouraged to get there early for a good spot.

The Kent Heritage Festival is planned and operated by the Kent Area Chamber of Commerce in collaboration with Kent’s United Services Organization (a partnership of eight service organizations).

“The committee of volunteers starts planning in January and works tirelessly to ensure that this event that draws over 20,000 to downtown Kent is a success,” says Lori Wemhoff, festival chairperson. “The success of the Kent Heritage Festival depends solely on the vendors who participate, and sponsorships and contributions received. The expenses far exceed the money brought in each year, and yet we try to provide a bigger and better event each year.

“One area that the committee focused on increasing this year is the fireworks display that so many enjoy,” Wemhoff adds. “Last year, due to a malfunction of materials, a good amount of the fireworks set to go off didn’t. This year, with it being the 20th annual event, we increased the fireworks order substantially and hope everyone will come out and enjoy the free entertainment.”

Porthouse Theatre’s 2015 Season Opens With Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music

Production will leave you smiling under summer’s starry skies

Porthouse Theatre, Kent State University’s outdoor summer theatre located on the grounds of Blossom Music Center, will open its 47th season with Stephen Sondheim’s masterpiece A Little Night Music.

Directed and choreographed by Sean Morrissey, A Little Night Music opened June 12 and runs through June 27. With music and lyrics by Sondheim and book by Hugh Wheeler, A Little Night Music explores the romantic web that entangles actress Desiree Armfeldt as she moves through 1900 Swedish society. Performances are June 23, 24, 25, 26 and 27 at 8 p.m.

Porthouse Theatre’s producing artistic director and Kent State Professor Terri J. Kent* returns to the Porthouse stage as Desiree Armfeldt, accompanied by Associate Professor Fabio Polanco* as Fredrik Egerman, Jim Weaver* as Count Carl-Magnus, Lenne Snively* as Madame Armfeldt and Lucy Anders* as Anne Egerman. Music direction is by Associate Professor Jonathan Swoboda, scenic design by Ben Needham, costume design by Associate Professor S.Q. Campbell, lighting design by T.C.
