Join the Kent State Golden Flashes for the Kent State Athletics Community Caravan

Kent State University head coaches and administrators will be appearing at various Giant Eagle locations throughout the summer. Meet head football coach Darrell Hazell and head men’s basketball coach Rob Senderoff as well as other Kent State Golden Flashes staff members at the Kent State Athletics Community Caravan on July 30.

Fans can pick up a hot dog and Coke for just $1, with all proceeds benefitting Akron Children’s Hospital. In addition, there will be free Kent State cookies, interactive games and the opportunity to get autographs.

Musical Comedy Hello, Dolly! Hits Porthouse Theatre’s Stage July 28 - Aug. 14

Northeast Ohio’s premiere outdoor professional summer theatre, Kent State University’s Porthouse Theatre, will open the musical comedy Hello, Dolly! on Thursday, July 28 through Aug. 14.

The opening night is Friday, July 29, and it will feature a complimentary reception following the performance provided by Totally Cooked Catering and delicious cakes from The West Side Bakery in Akron. Two additional performances have been added on Sunday, Aug. 14, at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Hello, Dolly! is a musical with lyrics and music by Jerry Herman and a book by Michael Stewart, based on Thornton Wilder's 1938 farce The Merchant of Yonkers, which Wilder revised and retitled The Matchmaker in 1955. Hello, Dolly! was first produced on Broadway by David Merrick in 1964, winning the Tony Award for Best Musical and nine other Tonys. The show has become one of the most enduring musical theatre hits, enjoying three Broadway revivals and international success. It was also made into a 1969 film that was nominated for seven Academy Awards. Most recently, the musical won three Olivier Awards for its 2010 revival.

Show director Victoria Bussert serves as director of the Baldwin-Wallace College musical theatre program and is a well-known director in both the Cleveland and New York City area. Joining Bussert is seasoned choreographer John R. Crawford, who currently serves as the dean of Kent State’s College of the Arts; and musical director Jonathan Swoboda, who serves as musical director for Kent State’s School of Theatre and Dance, as well as being the featured keyboard artist for Mannheim Steamroller.

Lighting design for Hello, Dolly! is by seasoned lighting professional Cynthia Stillings, who also wears multiple hats as Porthouse’s producing director and school director of Kent State’s School of Theatre and Dance. Nolan O’Dell will do scenic design and sound design will be done by Jason Potts, both of whom are alumni of the School of Theatre and Dance at Kent State University.

Starring as leading lady Dolly Levi is Porthouse Theatre Artistic Director Terri Kent ,who ends her 13-year acting hiatus with this role. Kent serves as the head of Kent State’s School of Theatre and Dance musical theatre program. The part of Horace Vandergelder will be played by Chuck Richie, a professor with Kent State’s School of Theatre and Dance, who is familiar to audiences throughout the Cleveland area.

Shows run Tuesday through Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are $33 - $17 on Saturday, $30 - $16 Tues. through Friday and $30 - $17 Sunday matinee. Group prices are available for 20 or more people. Cash, check, Visa, MasterCard and Discover are accepted.

The box office is located in the Music and Speech Center on the corner of Main Street and Horning Road on the Kent Campus. The box office on the grounds of Porthouse Theatre opens 90 minutes prior to curtain. Box dinners are available for pre-order 48 hours prior to the scheduled performance. Porthouse Theatre also has a full concession stand featuring sandwiches, salads, snacks, drinks and ice cream.

WKSU-FM’s Folk Alley Partners with NPR to Present Exclusive Broadcasts from the Newport Folk Festival

Continuing its tradition of bringing listeners the best live music from across the country, NPR Music, together with WKSU-FM’s FolkAlley.com and other partner radio stations, is exclusively live webcasting and broadcasting dozens of performances from George Wein’s Newport Folk Festival in Newport, R.I. on July 30 and 31. Two days of outstanding live music will be offered from leading bands, singers and artists. The schedule includes performances by The Decemberists, Emmylou Harris, M. Ward, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, the Civil Wars, Freelance Whales and many others

This is the third year that Folk Alley will be participating in NPR’s coverage of the Newport Folk Festival, one of the most influential series of performances in the history of the contemporary folk genre. WKSU-FM’s mobile recording studio will be positioned next to the Harbor Stage and will serve as base camp for Folk Alley’s recording and webcasts.

Folk festival concerts will be accessible through free, live audio webcasts at NPR Music, and live station broadcasts. FolkAlley.com will offer a special page with images and exclusive audio and interviews captured in Newport. NPR Music's coverage will be available at npr.org/newportfolk. Hosting NPR Music's coverage of the Newport Folk Festival are Bob Boilen, host and creator of the popular show All Songs Considered and its "Live in Concert" series, NPR music critic Ann Powers and WFUV host and music director Rita Houston.
