University Libraries Exhibits Works of Pulitzer Novelist
The works of Pulitzer prize-winning
American novelist Edith Wharton are on
exhibit at University Libraries on the Kent
Campus through Aug. 25.
University Libraries will exhibit the works of Edith Wharton, Pulitzer prize-winning American novelist, in celebration of her 150th birthday.
The exhibit will run until Aug. 25 and will feature a portrait of Wharton and six of her first-edition novels, including the Pulitzer prize-winning novel The Age of Innocence, with its original dust jacket still intact.
The books in the exhibit are drawn from holdings of Special Collections and Archives, which houses a strong collection of 19th and 20th century American literature. Readers are invited to visit the 12th floor of the library to see other exhibits and to use these collections.

Cleveland Orchestra Talents Perform With Kent State Music Professor for Third Kent/Blossom Music Festival Faculty Series

Kent/Blossom Music Festival, the summer chamber music intensive at Kent State University’s Hugh A. Glauser School of Music, continues its 2012 Faculty Concert Series on Wednesday, July 11, at 7:30 p.m. in the Ludwig Recital Hall on the Kent Campus. Ludwig Recital Hall is in the Music and Speech Building on 1325 Theatre Dr. Parking is free.
The concert, titled “Romance and Rhapsodies,” will feature the talents of The Cleveland Orchestra’s first associate concertmaster Peter Otto, first assistant principal cellist Richard Weiss, keyboard principal Joela Jones, assistant principal viola Stanley Konopka, along with Kent/Blossom Music’s co-artistic coordinator and principal oboe of the Erie Philharmonic Danna Sundet.
The evening’s program includes Three Romances by Clara Schumann, Two Rhapsodies by Loeffler and B major Piano Trio by Brahms.

Kent State Faculty, Staff and Alumni Invited to Celebrate Black Studies Programs

State. Events that celebrate the creation and
development of the program will take place on
July 14 and 15.
Kent State University faculty, staff members and alumni who attended the university between 1967 and now are invited to an event that celebrates the creation and development of the Black Studies Program and Cultural Center. The program, which began as the Institute for African American Affairs in 1969, led to the development of the Center of Pan-African Culture and the Department of Pan-African Studies. These operations have helped to shape the educational and cultural experiences of all Kent State students, as well as faculty and staff members.
The celebration event will feature a picnic on Saturday, July 14, at Horseshoe Lake Park in Shaker Heights from noon to 8:30 p.m. Feel free to bring your own prepared dish as well. A photo shoot of all who have been involved with or impacted by the program will take place on Sunday, July 15, at Ritchie Hall on the Kent Campus at 1 p.m. Plan on arriving no later than 12:30 p.m. Participants also will have the opportunity to tour the recently renovated Ritchie Hall with refreshments served.
Silas Ashley, ‘74, an alumnus of the Department of Pan-African Studies, is organizing the event and says he hopes the photo shoot captures the faces of those who made the center a reality.
“It will be a memorable weekend that will never be forgotten,” Ashley says. “How often do you have the opportunity to have a ball while engaging in something historic, as well?”
Emeritus Professor and alumnus Tim Moore, ’73, who was a former associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and who studied and taught in the Department of Pan-African Studies for more than 40 years, credits the institute for promoting scholarly lectures, research and publications, as well as significant cultural programming in the Center of Pan-African Culture.
“A lot of people influenced the creation of the Black Studies Program at Kent State and many more have benefited from the program,” says Moore. “This is an opportunity to get everyone together to celebrate both those who were involved in developing the center and department and those who passed through the program as students.”

Kent State Tuscarawas to Hold Season Unveiling for Performing Arts Center’s 2012-2013 Program
Kent State University at Tuscarawas in New Philadelphia is holding a special Season Unveiling on July 21 to announce the more than 20 events scheduled for the Performing Arts Center’s 2012-2013 season. Tickets for this event, which begins at 5:30 p.m., are $25 and include live entertainment, hors d’oeuvres and a chance to win two tickets to every production for the upcoming season.
“This is the second year for us to use this unique method of announcing the third season of our Performing Arts Center,” says Mike Morelli, general manager of the Performing Arts Center. “As we did last year, we will have a fun and interactive game to provide clues as to which shows will be coming next year. The person who correctly identifies the most shows will win two tickets to all of the listed performances. Those attending the party will have the first opportunity to buy tickets for the season.”
Proceeds from the $25 ticket price will go toward the Performing Arts Endowment Fund.
