Mail Services is hosting a series of four 1-hour seminars about best practices and methods for successful use of the many services provided by the United States Postal Service (USPS). Join us to learn and explore the sometimes confusing rules and regulations that Kent State's mail needs to adhere to in order to obtain the best postage rates and delivery times.

Help Build Pre- Homecoming Excitement by Wearing 2010 Homecoming T-Shirt

Kent State University Alumni Relations encourages all faculty and staff to wear the 2010 Homecoming T-shirt on the next two Fridays, Oct. 1 and 8, with advance approval from supervisors.

2010 Homecoming T-shirts are available at the Kent State University Bookstore for $10. There is a discount for university departments that order more than 20 shirts at one time. The T-shirt depicts the rivalry between the Kent State Golden Flashes and The University of Akron Zips football squads.

Nancy Schiappa, associate director of Alumni Relations, says, "We are hoping to build up the Homecoming spirit and excitement with the Homecoming T-shirt days."

The 2010 Homecoming football game also marks the return of the Flashes to the home field as they do battle with arch rival, The University of Akron, in the battle for the wagon wheel. That game begins at 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 9.

Ticket Sales Begin This Week for the 38th Annual Olde English Yuletide Feaste

The Kent Student Center is excited to continue a beloved tradition into its 38th year as the Olde English Yuletide Feaste is presented in the Kent Student Center Ballroom on the evenings of Dec. 2, 3 and 4.

The Kent State University Chorale, directed by Scott MacPherson, dresses in period costume and entertains with madrigal music, dancing, juggling and more. Experience the wonder inside the Kent Student Center Ballroom which is magically transformed into Queen Elizabeth's castle, creating the perfect atmosphere for a night of holiday merriment and mirth.

Liquid Crystal Day 2010 Is Set for Oct. 8

The Liquid Crystal Institute and Chemical Physics Interdisciplinary Program invite you to attend Liquid Crystal Day 2010, "Liquid Crystals With Biological Relevance" on Friday, Oct. 8, 2010. The event will be held in the Liquid Crystal and Materials Sciences Building Samsung Auditorium.

Liquid Crystal Day serves to provide platforms for intellectual and enlightening interactions between students and researchers from different academic and professional areas. This annual event was initiated by Professor L. C. Chien in 2004 to continue the Liquid Crystal Institute's tradition of holding symposia on liquid crystals. The event is free and open to the public.

The goals of the event are three-fold: to provide a platform for several distinguished experts in the field of liquid crystals to shed light on some important topics in the field; to bring back Kent State alumni to speak about their experience at Kent State and how that experience helped advance their career, and to give future Ph.D. students in the Chemical Physics Interdisciplinary Graduate Program a sneak peek of what the field of liquid crystals has to offer.

Distinguished Invited speakers include:

• Prof. Robert Meyer, Brandeis University

The Writing Commons Announces International Student Coffee and Conversation Hour

The Writing Commons invites international students for casual conversation with native speakers. This semester, our popular "Coffee and Conversation Hour" will take place every Friday from noon - 1 p.m. in the Writing Commons, located on the 4th floor of the Library.

Back by popular demand, Writing Commons Tutor Kyle Roerink will host international students who would like to increase their time conversing with native speakers. Roerink will lead a team of Writing Commons tutors and volunteers at the Friday sessions. "I am trying to improve my Spanish, for my upcoming trip to Chile," says Roerink. "So I feel we tutors benefit as much as the international students who join us."

Students are encouraged to bring their lunches and make themselves at home. The Writing Commons will provide coffee and tea and native speakers. No appointment or RSVP is necessary. Students may come and go as they please. The event is free and open to everyone.

"We're excited to host this event once again," says Writing Commons Director Jeanne Smith. "Many of the people who use the Writing Commons services are international students, and this event is a great way for them to get to know the tutors better."

The Writing Commons helps all Kent State University students, from first-year students to doctoral candidates, with any writing projects they have, in any course or program. The Writing Commons helps students with projects outside of school, such as graduate school application essays and writing for publication. Staff at the Writing Commons help with all parts of the composing and revising process: from understanding assignments and getting started, to generating and organizing ideas, to editing prose and documenting sources. All writers on campus can benefit from the feedback and support the Writing Commons provides.

Faculty Members Encouraged to Attend SBIR 101 Workshop to Learn About Business Collaboration

The Division of Research and Sponsored Programs encourages faculty members who plan to collaborate with small businesses (or are considering a start-up) to attend SBIR 101, a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Grant Workshop, on Tuesday, Oct. 5, from 9 a.m. to noon in Room 306A of the Kent Student Center.

The half-day workshop, focuses on health-related grants, covers the $2.3 billion dollar federal SBIR/STTR program basics, including: program purpose; eligibility; and federal agency sources of funding (such as NIH, CDC, DOD and NSF). The workshop is targeted to a broad audience that is still exploring the SBIR/STTR program. It is designed to provide enough information for attendees to determine if they would like to seriously pursue proposal development.

This workshop is sponsored by Kent State University Division of Research and Sponsored Programs and BioEnterprise.

College of Education, Health and Human Services Announces 2010 Hall of Fame Winners

As part of Kent State University's 2010 Homecoming festivities, the College of Education, Health and Human Services will honor eight distinguished alumni at its inaugural Hall of Fame Award Ceremony on Friday, Oct. 8, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Kent Student Center ballroom.

Tickets for the event are $35 per person and include hors d'oeuvres, followed by a sit-down meal.

The first class in the College of Education, Health and Human Services Hall of Fame includes:

Centennial Alumni Award
Dr. Fay Biles, '56

Biles was the first female vice president of an Ohio university, serving Kent State from 1972 -78. She also is a member of the Ohio Women's Hall of Fame, and is nationally and internationally known for her work and research in the field of human resource development.

Distinguished Alumni Award
Dr. William Herbert, '67, '69, '71

Serving as a Virginia Tech University full-time faculty member for 37 years until retirement in 2008, Herbert established the first exercise physiology laboratory on that campus and developed the curriculum for the program. He has published more than 120 scientific journal articles, book chapters, monographs and other edited works.

Dr. Thomas Hohenshil, '65, '68, '71
Hohenshil served at Virginia Tech University for more than 30 years as a leading counselor and education and school psychology faculty member. He was awarded numerous teaching honors, has written more than 125 refereed articles, book chapters, and essays and secured significant research funding.

Recent Alumni Award

Dave Herpy, '01

Presently serving as outdoor adventure and camp coordinator for the Department of Recreational Services, Herpy received the Administrator of the Year Award in 2007-08 at Kent State. He also received a 2010 President's Excellence Award.

Diversity Alumni Award

The Rev. Dr. Ron Fowler, '59

Fowler taught in the Detroit Public Schools from 1959-63 and was the senior pastor at the Arlington Church of God in Akron with more than 1,200 members. Currently, he consults and offers assistance on such Kent State projects as advancing the university's relationships with the Akron and Cleveland public schools, improving the recruitment and retention of diverse background students, mentoring students, working with alumni and the Pan-African Faculty and Staff Association, as well as assisting with bringing major gifts to the university.

International Alumni Award

Dr. Issaou Gado, '04

Gado, director of the National Institute of Research and Teachers Training, came to Kent State as a science teacher from Benin, West Africa, to complete the requirements as a post-doctoral student in evaluation and measurement. He is considered the leading chemistry and physics author in Africa and co-authors many books with fellow alumnus, Rapheal Kalani.

Distinguished Service to EHHS

Rae Mandel, '56

Mandel retired from career of teaching kindergarten in Perry Local School 10 years ago and continues to give back to Kent State and her community through charity, volunteering and advocacy efforts. She has made lifetime gifts and pledges to the university in excess of $250,000, including a Medallion Scholarship for the college.

 Alumni Leadership Award

Dr. Judy Genshaft '73

Genshaft authored or co-authored 69 journal articles and three books. She is the past provost and vice president for academic affairs at the University of Albany. Currently, she is president of the University of South Florida System, which has been nationally recognized as a top-tier national research university, serving more than 47,000 students.

"We value our alumni and feel that it is important to recognize those who have committed their lives to serving others and making the world a better place," says College of Education, Health and Human Services Dean Daniel F. Mahony. "This year's eight alumni embody the values and mission of our college and their accomplishments are truly significant. We hope to continue this tradition of honoring alumni as part of Kent State's Homecoming festivities for many years to come."
