Professional Activities
Leah Subak, Amy Quillin, Olivia Krise, Sharon Cowling, Student Accessibility Services, presented "An Administrator's Journey Into the Deaf World" at the Association of Higher Education and Disability in New Orleans on July 11-14, 2012.
Richard Feinberg, Department of Anthropology, was invited to present "A Career in Pacific Anthropology" at the University of the South Pacific Centre in Atafu, Tokelau, on July 3, 2012.
Metin Yavuz, College of Podiatric Medicine, has recently been chosen as one of the two finalists to compete for the Clinical Biomechanics Award at the 2012 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Biomechanics on Aug. 15-18. The award recognizes outstanding biomechanics research targeting a contemporary clinical disorder and is sponsored by the scientific journal, Clinical Biomechanics Journal. The two finalists were selected from the top 10th percentile of abstracts submitted to the annual meeting. The winner of the competition is expected to publish their award-winning study in the Clinical Biomechanics Journal.
Richard Varga, Department of Mathematical Sciences, has been named a Class of 2012 Fellow by The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). Varga was honored at the SIAM Annual Meeting in Minneapolis, Minn., July 9-13, 2012 for his contributions to matrix analysis, numerical analysis, complex variables and approximation theory. He edits several journals in the field of computational mathematics, numerical analysis and algorithms, and is a SIAM book author.
Publications
Marianne Martens, School of Library and Information Science, authored the journal article "Issues of access and usability in designing digital resources for children," Library & Information Science Research, Volume 34, Issue 3, (2012): 159-168. Summary: The article discusses the developmental limitations children face, such as underdeveloped motor skills, difficulties with spelling, and trouble understanding hierarchies, classification schemes and metadata.
Steven Brown, Department of Political Science currently teaching Evaluation and Measurement with the School of Foundations, Leadership, and Administration, Ingunn Størksen, Arlene Arstad Thorsen, Klara Øverland, published “Experiences of Daycare Children of Divorce” in Early Child Development and Care, Volume 182, Issue 7, (2012): 807-825.
Denise Bedford, School of Library and Information Science, authored the chapter, "Religious Communities of Practice and Knowledge Management—The Potential for Cross-Domain Learning" in Knowledge Management Handbook: Collaboration and Social Networking, 2 ed., (Boca Raton, Fla.: CRC Press) Jay Liebowitz, (2012).
