Professional Activities
Paul Sherman, School of Library and Information Science, presented "Decision Insurance: Iterative Prototyping to Reduce Business Risk" at the UX Strategies Summit in San Francisco, California, in June 2015.
Additional Comments: Sherman also delivered a workshop on “Embedding UX into Ideation, Design, Development and Release”
Lala Hajibayova, School of Library and Information Science, presented "Basic-level concepts and the assessment of subject relevance: Are they really relevant?" at the Fifth North American Symposium on Knowledge Organization in Los Angeles, California, in June 2015.
Marcia Lei Zeng, School of Library and Information Science, presented "Visit and Scholarly Exchange at the Metadata Research Center" in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on May 18, 2015.
Additional Comments: Zeng was invited by Jane Greenberg, director of the Metadata Research Center (MRC) of College of Computing and Informatics, Drexel University.
Swathi Ravichandran, associate professor and coordinator of the Hospitality Management program at Kent State University, Lawrence Carter, Casey Gwin and Kelly Virginia Phelan were awarded a second-place prize of $750 for their case study “Event History and Housing Contract Clauses for a Dual-citywide Event: The 2014 Gay Games,” which was submitted to the ICHRIE Johnson & Wales Case Study Competition 2015. The case study competition received 22 case study submissions of a significant very high quality, the committee noted. The award was presented during the ICHRIE 2015 conference in Orlando, Florida, on July 31.
Tara Smith, associate professor in the College of Public Health, was chosen for the American Society for Microbiology Distinguished Lecturer (ASMDL) program. This is a two-year appointment within the society where branches of the American Society for Microbiology can request her (all expenses paid) to give a lecture (from the abstracts she provided), typically as part of its annual meeting.
Marcia Lei Zeng and Karen F. Gracy, School of Library and Information Science, presented "Introducing Cultural Heritage Informatics into the Curriculum of LIS Education" at a webinar by the Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T) in April 2015.
Additional Comments: The 44 individuals who participated in the live presentation represented 14 countries (Canada, India, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Netherlands, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Spain, Sweden, Trinidad and Tobago, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States). ASIS&T members can continue to view the recorded webinar on the association’s website.
Congratulations to College of Education, Health and Human Services’ faculty members Andy Lepp, Jacob Barkley and Aryn Karpinski. They received the award of Notable Article by Computing Reviews' 19th Annual Best of Computing lists for the 2014 article "The relationship between cell phone use, academic performance, anxiety, and satisfaction with life in college students." Of all of the articles published in 2014, it ranked in the top 100 for the most talked about articles in the media.

Andrii Varanytsia, graduate appointee with the Liquid Crystal Institute®, has been awarded a 2015 Optics and photonics Education Scholarship by SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics for his potential contributions to the field of optics, photonics or related fields. Varanytsia is supervised by Kent State Professor Liang-Chy Chien.
