Don Wicks, School of Library and Information Science, and Omer Farooq, College of Communication and Information, presented "Preaching Beyond the Pulpit: How Churches Disseminate Their Message" at the International Organization of Social Science and Behavioral Research in Atlantic City, N.J. on April 10-11, 2014.

Additional Comments: The research grew out of Wicks' involvement with Kent State's Center for the Study of Information and Religion.

Richard Feinberg, Department of Anthropology, made the following presentations at the recently concluded annual meeting of the Central States Anthropological Society in Normal, Ill., April 10-12, 2014:

• Auto-experimentation in Taumako Seafaring. Presented to session on “Canoes and Navigation”
• Introduction to Celestial Navigation. Presented to session on “Canoes and Navigation”
• Chaired session “Anthropological Approaches to Religion and New Religious Movements”
  

Thomas Gates, head of Kent state’s architecture and fashion libraries, was recently appointed by the Kent City Council to serve on the Committee on Design and Preservation. The three-year appointment will involve working for “…the overall improvement of the quality of the physical environment of the city.”

Patrick Coy, Ph.D., Center for Applied Conflict Management, was awarded the Magnificat Award by Marian University in Wisconsin during the university’s Commencement in May. The Magnificat Award is the highest honor offered by Marian University, and recognizes individuals who have exhibited outstanding service to their community, profession, career and/or their faith community. Coy, an alumnus of Marian University, was honored with the award for helping to build Kent State’s Center for Applied Conflict Management and for his work in the field of peace and conflict studies.
