Professional Activities

Marcia Zeng, School of Library and Information Science, presented “Multilingual Thesauri as Linked Data-Benefits and Opportunities” at The Fifth Metadata and Semantics Research Conference (MTSR2011) in Izmir, Turkey, Oct. 12-14, 2011.The conference covers the interdisciplinary areas of computer science and computer engineering.

Denise Bedford, School of Library and Information Science, presented, "Leveraging Knowledge Organization System-Fueled Semantic Technologies to Generate Tags and Tag Clouds" at the Networked Knowledge Organization Systems Workshop in Berlin, Germany, Sept. 28-29, 2011. The workshop was associated with the Theory and Practice of Digital Libraries Conference.

Marcia Zeng, School of Library and Information Science, presented “Extending model for controlled vocabularies to classification systems: modeling DDC with FRSAD” at the Third International UCD Seminar Classification & Ontology in the Netherlands, Sept. 19-20, 2011.

Summary: The conference was attended by delegates from 30 countries from Europe, Asia, North America, South America and Australia. Her presentation is a collaborated work with the Dewey Decimal Classification Editor-in-chief Joan Mitchell and Dr. Maja Zumer.

Carolyn Brodie, School of Library and Information Science, presented “75th Caldecott Anniversary” at the Summer Library Symposium hosted by the Northeast Ohio Regional Library System (NEO-RLS) in Kent, Ohio, in July 2011. Brodie was recently elected president (for 2012-2013) of the International Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), which oversees both the Caldecott and Newbery awards, the world’s most noted and oldest children’s literature awards. She also has served on both committees for ALSC and chaired the Newbery committee in 2000.

Marcia Zeng, School of Library and Information Science, gave lectures, presentations and a keynote on Linked Data and Relevant Resource Description Framework (RDF) vocabulary standards at several events in China in June, including the National Library of China, Shanxi Provence LIS Society Annual Conference, Northeast University School of Public Management, China Academic Forum and Advanced Digital Library Seminar 2011, Shanghai Advanced Library Technologies Forum and Wuhan University iSchool.


Publications

Joseph Ortiz, Department of Geology, served as lead editor for a special volume devoted to Arctic Oceanography for the magazine, Oceanography, a publication of The Oceanography Society (TOS). The project included working with a team of guest editors from various institutions in the United States, and coordinating the efforts of authors from around the world. Ortiz was invited to start work on the project in July 2010, and completed the volume on time, in September 2011. The resulting volume is the largest special volume assembled by TOS.
