Professional Activities
Denise A.D. Bedford, School of Library and Information Science, presented "Topology of Transportation Information Sources and Systems" at the National Academy of Sciences Transportation Research Board 93rd Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C, in January 2014.
The paper led to joint research conducted with Lisa Loyo, manager, Information Services, Transportation Research Board, National Academy of Sciences.
Michele Ewing, APR, associate professor, School of Journalism and Mass Communication, received the Davis Young Award for Exceptional Mentors from the Greater Cleveland Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA). The award was presented to her during the 2014 Hill Lighthouse Young Awards Luncheon held April 10, 2014, in Cleveland. The Davis Young Award recognizes a member of the chapter who excels in mentoring students and young professionals through hands-on instruction and support.
Marianne Martens, School of Library and Information Science, presented "Oral History of Children’s Publishing" at the Annual Fay B. Kaigler Children’s Book Festival in Hattiesburg, Mass., on March 2014.
Martens received the 2013-14 Ezra Jack Keats/Janina Domanska Research Fellowship for which her project, “Oral History of Children’s Publishing,” was unanimously selected. She will visit the De Grummond Children’s Literature Collection to conduct research in addition to her presentation at the Fay B. Kaigler Children’s Book Festival.
Denise A.D. Bedford, School of Library and Information Science, presented "The Ten Facets of Knowledge Management" at the National Academy of Sciences Transportation Research Board 93rd Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C., on January 2014.
The paper was used in the State Departments of Transportation knowledge strategies and will be used as a foundation for knowledge management work within the international transportation community.
Marianne Martens, School of Library and Information Science, Joyce Valenza and Anthony Bernier presented "Online Community Building" as part of the High-touch Training Through Tech: Approaches to Online Education in Youth Services panel at the ALISE Preliminary Conference in Philadelphia, Pa. on January 2014.
Denise A.D. Bedford, School of Library and Information Science, presented "Become a Member" at the Advisory Committee for the Enterprise Architecture Models for Education project in Charlotte, N.C., on January 2014.

Joe Clark, University Libraries, Performing Arts Library, and Susannah Cleveland, edited a book, Careers in Music Libraries III: Reality and Reinvention, 3rd Ed., Middleton, WI: A-R Editions and the Music Library Association, 2014.
Additional comments: Music librarianship — this volume provides career resources and guidance for current and future librarians, as well as insights for mentors and educators working with these populations. In addition to editing the book, Joe Clark authored chapter 4 titled: “Breaking into the Fields in a Tough Job Market.”

John Simmons, School of Library and Information Science, authored Fluid Preservation: A Comprehensive Reference, 1 Ed., Lanham, Maryland: Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, 2014. Simmons is an adjunct faculty member who teaches in the museum studies specialization in the School of Library and Information Science.
