Professional Activities

James Hardy, President’s office, and Justin Hilton, University Relations, are recipients of the Greater Akron Chamber’s “30 for the Future” award which honors young professionals, ages 25-39, whose contributions impact their industries and the Greater Akron region. Independent committees selected the recipients based on the finalists’ leadership documents, which showcased professional and community accomplishments, team building, leadership and creativity in overcoming obstacles. Recipients were nominated by members of the Greater Akron Chamber, regional for-profit and nonprofit organizations and many of the area’s young professional organizations.

Dr. Andrew Lepp, Foundation, Leadership, and Administration, was on the scientific committee for the “7th ATLAS (Association for Tourism and Leisure Education) Africa Conference 2011” held at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda, Africa, June 6-8, 2011.

Dr. Pamela Evans, College of Architecture and Environmental Design, was recently appointed to represent accredited programs as director of the Council for Interior Design Accreditation’s Board of Directors. Evans is a Fellow of the Interior Design Educator's Council (IDEC) and has also served on the IDEC Board, including one term as president. June 24, 2011.

Idris Kabir Syed, Pan-African Studies, presented “African and Islamic Influences in Maroon Culture: A Syncretic View” at the Third International Maroon Conference in Charles Town, Portland, Jamaica, June 22-25, 2011.

Gretchen Rinnert, Visual Communication Design, presented “The Value of Motion in Design Education” at The Summit: The State of Design Education, hosted by University and College Designers Association in Jersey City, N.J., May 26, 2011.

Jillian Lindner and Gretchen Rinnert, Visual Communication Design, presented a co-authored paper titled “Creativity and Innovation in Design Education,” at “The Summit: The State of Design Education” hosted by the University and College Designers Association in Jersey City, N. J., May 27, 2011.
