Professional Activities

Richard Feinberg, Department of Anthropology, recently returned from a three-week expedition to the Solomon Islands where he served as an ethnographic consultant in making a documentary film dealing with environmental sustainability on the Polynesian island of Anuta. Anuta is a remote island that is typically visited by outsiders no more than once or twice a year. The film is being created as part of a project titled “1,000 Days for the Planet,” sponsored by the Sedna Foundation (a Canadian non-governmental organization) in collaboration with the United Nations Secretariat for the Convention on Biodiversity and the government of Quebec. Timoty Rasinski, School of Teaching, Learning and Curriculum Studies, has partnered with Scientific Learning Corp. (OTCQB:SCIL) to share his expertise on the topics of reading fluency and comprehension. Scientific Learning is the maker of the Reading Assistant™ and Fast ForWord® online learning programs. Rasinski will participate as a member of the advisory board for the Reading Assistant program, and provide input into its ongoing development and enhancement. In addition, Rasinski will write blog posts and papers, and lead webinars on issues related to fluency and its importance in reading.

Ralph Lorenz, School of Music, presented "Aural Tracking of Modulations: Does It Matter? Is It Possible?" at the Midwestern Music Cognition Symposium in Columbus, Ohio, on May 24, 2013.

Talea Drummer, Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, presented "Making Use of a Smaller Academic Structure" at the 2013 N4A National Convention in Jacksonville, Fla., on June 6-9, 2013.

Summary: Presentation discussed new initiatives created for student-athletes at Kent State and how other institutions with small budgets could formulate similar programs to support the academic endeavors of our student-athletes.

Denise Bedford, School of Library and Information Science, presented "Applications of Text and Social Media Analytics" at the Government Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C., on May 21, 2013.

Denise Bedford, School of Library and Information Science, B. DeVille, and R. LaValley, presented "A Tale of Two SAS technologies: Generating Maps of Topical Coverage and Linkages in SAS User Conference Papers" at the SAS Global Forum in San Fransisco, Calif., April 2013.
