Owen Lovejoy and his colleagues.

- Posted Dec. 10, 2009 - Kent State Professors Help Break Tetrahedra Packing Record Two Kent State University professors are part of a team of researchers who recently uncovered a way to pack tetrahedra, considered to be the simplest shaped regular solids with its four triangular sides, more densely than ever before. Peter Palffy-Muhoray, professor of chemical physics and associate director of the Liquid Crystal Institute at Kent State, and Xiaoyu Zheng, assistant professor in Kent State’s Department of Mathematical Sciences, along with four colleagues at the University of Michigan and one at Case Western Reserve University, have broken a world record for packing the most tetrahedra into a given volume.

- Posted Nov. 20, 2009 - Media Advisory Concerning Student Death A Kent State University student, Jessica F. Schenk, 19, of Port Clinton, Ohio, was discovered unconscious in her residence hall this morning and pronounced dead by the Portage County Coroner’s Office. Schenk, a resident of Wright Hall, was a sophomore majoring in physical education. The cause of death has not been determined, but foul play is not suspected.

All proceeds from Jock Jams will be donated to the American Cancer Society.

- Posted Nov. 9, 2009 - Residence Hall Students Received H1N1 Flu Vaccine Last week, the university acquired its first shipment of the H1N1 vaccine and conducted clinics for vaccinating residence hall students. Held at the Eastway Private Dining Room on Nov. 3 and 4, approximately 1,000 students received the H1N1 flu-mist vaccine. Students from the College of Nursing assisted University Health Services personnel in administering the vaccines. In addition, about 500 people received the seasonal flu vaccine.

- Posted Nov. 2, 2009 - H1N1 Flu Clinics Announced for Residence Hall Students The university has been able to acquire its first shipment of the H1N1 vaccine and has scheduled clinics for vaccinating residence hall students. The shipment received was entirely the flu-mist form and therefore requires some additional screening to ensure that it may be safely administered.

Lefton will be joined by Dr. Deborah Wilson of the National Institutes of Health, former Ohio Congressman Ralph Regula, community and business leaders, university officials and other guests to celebrate Kent State being named the nation’s second Designated Training Facility of the National Institutes of Health’s National Biosafety and Biocontainment Training Program (NBBTP). - Posted Oct. 28, 2009 - Kent State University to Offer New Bachelor Degree in Public Health Kent State University has received approval by the Ohio Board of Regents to offer a bachelor of science (B.S.P.H.) degree in public health. Kent State University is currently accepting applications for the B.S.P.H. program for fall 2010, and courses will be available this spring semester through the Experimental Programs (EXPR) Division. The College of Public Health is also planning an undergraduate certificate in public health.

- Posted Oct. 20, 2009 - Award-Winning Poet, Adam Sol, Oct. 26 The Wick Poetry Center will host a reading from Adam Sol on Monday, Oct. 26, at 7:30 p.m. in the Wick Poetry Corner which is on the 2nd floor of the Kent State Library.
During this event, Sol will be reading from his recent book, “Jeremiah, Ohio,” a novel in poems. His previous books include “Jonah’s Promise,” which won MidList Press’ First Series Book Award for Poetry, and “Crowd of Sounds,” which won the Trillium Award for Poetry in 2004.
