Kent State University on Track With Three-Year Degree Program
Kent State University has created a selection of accelerated degree programs for students that will allow them to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in three years. The programs are in line with a three-year degree program proposed by Gov. John Kasich and adopted by the Ohio legislature.

World-Renowned Harvard Chemistry Professor to Speak at Kent State, Oct. 9
On Oct. 9, Kent State University will host a seminar by Harvard Chemistry Professor George M. Whitesides at the Kent Student Center Kiva. The seminar, “Simplicity as a Component of Invention,” will begin at 3:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

Todd Diacon, Kent State University senior vice president for academic affairs and provost, today announced new leadership appointments in the Division of Academic Affairs. The Division of Academic Affairs is responsible for all academic programs at the university, including all of Kent State’s colleges, campuses and a variety of other initiatives.

Cleveland Attorney Appointed Kent State President’s Ambassador
Kent State University President Lester A. Lefton has appointed Cleveland-area trial lawyer José C. Feliciano as the 2012-2013 President’s Ambassador. The President’s Ambassadorship, a one-year, part-time appointment beginning fall 2012, is designed to bring distinguished local minority professionals to share their professional knowledge and experience with the Kent State community.

Final Day to Register to Vote is Oct. 9
Kent State University students, faculty and staff members who have not yet registered to vote have until Tuesday, Oct. 9, at 9 p.m. to complete their registration in time to vote in the Nov. 6 general election.

New Kent State Architecture Building Generates Excitement in the Architecture Profession
Kent State University’s College of Architecture and Environmental Design will soon be getting a new home on the Kent State University Esplanade, a pedestrian walkway through campus that is currently being extended into downtown Kent, Ohio.

Kent State University will officially open its much-anticipated May 4 Visitors Center on Saturday, Oct. 20, as part of the university’s Homecoming celebration. The public is invited to experience the center’s dramatic exhibits at an open house from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Visiting Scholar to Speak at Kent State About Inequality at Birth
Janet Currie, professor of economics and public affairs at Princeton University, will visit Kent State University on Oct. 15 and 16 as part of the Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar Program. Kent State Hosts Seventh Annual Entrepreneurship Extravaganza on Oct. 24 and 25
Kent State University’s Center for Entrepreneurship and Business Innovation will host its seventh annual Entrepreneurship Extravaganza on Wednesday, Oct. 24, and Thursday, Oct. 25, at the Kent Student Center. The theme for this year’s event is “The Magic of Entrepreneurship Exposed,” which will feature several workshops, panel discussions and speakers, and the opportunity to learn from experienced entrepreneurs. The program is free and open to the community and to all students, but registration is required by Oct. 19.

Kent State Researchers Awarded National Science Foundation Grant
Researchers from Kent State University’s Department of Geology have been awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to study diversity, evolution and extinction in crabs, lobsters, and shrimps. The $100,000, two-year grant will fund the study of this economically important, diverse group of animals whose geologic history extends back 400 million years.

Kent State Named Military Friendly School Fourth Year in a Row
Kent State University has been named a Military Friendly School by G.I. Jobs magazine for the fourth year in a row. In addition, Kent State University at Ashtabula and Kent State University at Tuscarawas also received the honors, both for the third year in a row.

KSU Advisory: Oct. 28 Robbery Reported Near Kent Campus
Around 1:30 a.m., a man walking near Hilltop Drive and the Esplanade was punched in the face and robbed by four black males, who fled the area heading east. Anyone with information should contact Kent State Police immediately at 330-672-2212.

Kent State’s VITA Program Seeks Volunteers to Assist in Its Free Services This Tax Season
Kent State University’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is seeking volunteers to assist in a free tax-filing service this tax season for low-to moderate-income individuals who qualify to have their income taxes filed free of charge.
Paula DiVencenzo, business and finance tax manager at Kent State, says that she is seeking volunteers who would like to lend a helping hand while gaining valuable professional skills.

Advisory: Kent Campus Safety Alert
Kent State University Police are investigating the intentional burning of five paper name tags hung on doors in Prentice Hall. Most of the incidents are thought to have occurred sometime during the last week. All of the burnings resulted in a partial or complete destruction of each of the five paper name tags. No other damage was sustained as a result of the activity.

WKSU’s Vivian Goodman Inducted into Cleveland Journalism Hall of Fame
WKSU host and reporter Vivian Goodman has been inducted into the Cleveland Journalism Hall of Fame during an event presented by the Press Club of Cleveland at the Hilton Garden Inn. Other inductees for 2012 included Jim Collins, Ted Diadiun, Vern Henry and Stuart Warner. Plaques for all inductees hang at Nighttown restaurant in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. The event helped celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Press Club of Cleveland and the 31st class of the Journalism Hall of Fame.

Kent State Game Watch Parties Scheduled for 2012 Marathon MAC Football Championship
The Kent State University Golden Flashes have captured the MAC East Division title with a perfect 8-0 record and will participate in the 2012 Marathon Mid-American Conference football championship against West Division Champion Northern Illinois. Kent State University will hold its fall commencement ceremonies at 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15, at the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center (MAC Center). Kent State will confer 1,963 degrees, including 1,531 bachelor’s degrees, 370 master’s degrees, 59 doctoral degrees and 3 educational specialist degrees.

Kent State’s Online PR Graduates Highlight Academic Success, Convenience and Diversity
For some students graduating from Kent State University on Saturday, Dec. 15, their walk across the stage at the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center will be their first time actually stepping foot on campus. On that day, 16 students from around the country graduate from Kent State’s online master’s degree concentration in public relations. Many of them are traveling to Kent to celebrate their achievement as inaugural graduates of the two-year, completely online degree program.

Kent State to Receive State Funding to Support Student Intern Programs
Kent State University was selected to receive $724,553 of state funding to support workforce development strategies and enhance student success through internship and co-op programs linked to key industries targeted for growth in Ohio. The funding will support up to 200 student interns and improve the intern tracking system to discover new opportunities and to develop a strong feedback loop between the university and area companies, contingent upon Controlling Board approval in January.

Ohio Third Frontier Funding Could Lead to New Kent State Spin-Off Technology Companies
The State of Ohio’s Third Frontier Program announced on Dec. 13 that Kent State University was awarded three of the nine Phase I awards given through its Technology Validation and Start-Up Fund (TVSF). The goal of the TVSF is to create greater economic growth in Ohio-based start-up companies that commercialize technologies developed by Ohio institutions of higher education and other Ohio not-for-profit research institutions.
