Kent State Selected Again to Host Fulbright Visiting Scholars This Summer
Kent State University will host scholars from Iraq and Libya for 10 weeks this summer as part of the Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program. The prestigious program is sponsored by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars and supported by the U.S. Department of State’s Educational and Cultural Affairs Bureau.

Kent State Hosts Aviation Camp for Female High School Students, July 18-20
Female high school students and their mothers will learn about aviation and other science-related fields at a special overnight aviation camp held at Kent State University. The university’s College of Applied Engineering, Sustainability and Technology is holding its fifth Nikki Kukwa Memorial Aviation Camp from Thursday, July 18, through Saturday¸ July 20.

Kent State Student Designers Combat Malaria With Award-Winning Work
Students in the Master of Fine Arts program in the School of Visual Communication Design at Kent State University earned Student Notable Honoree status, placing them in the top six of all national entries, in the Core77 2013 Design Awards for their Healthcare Visuals Kibera project. This is the second award the team has earned last month, with Metropolis magazine naming it runner-up in its Next Generation Design Competition.

Kent State Atmospheric Research Group Awarded $330,000 NSF Grant
The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded a three-year, $330,000 National Science Foundation grant to Kent State University’s Atmospheric Research Group for its project titled “Measurements of Amines during the Southern Oxidant and Aerosol Study (SOAS) Field Campaign.” The project will be led by Shanhu Lee, Ph.D., associate professor of environmental health sciences in Kent State’s College of Public Health.

Kent State’s Summer Commencement Ceremonies Occur Aug. 17
Kent State University will hold its summer commencement ceremonies at 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17, at the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center (MAC Center). Kent State will confer 1,593 degrees, including 836 bachelor’s degrees, 455 master’s degrees, 83 doctoral degrees, 198 associate degrees and 21 educational specialist degrees.

Kent State Forms Presidential Search Committee
Kent State University has formed a search committee to recruit its 12th president, who will succeed retiring President Lester A. Lefton. In April, Dr. Lefton announced his retirement from the presidency of Ohio’s second largest public university, effective July 1, 2014. He has served as Kent State’s chief executive officer since July 1, 2006.

Kent State Awarded Two Grants from U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
Kent State University has been awarded two grants from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. One grant, for research on physical activity levels and obesity, totaled $384,192, and the second grant, for stress-induced noradrenergic modulation of neuroinflammation research, totaled $441,600. The grants were part of the Department of Health and Human Services’ Academic Research Enhancement Awards.

Kent State Approves Work to Begin on New Building for the College of Applied Engineering, Sustainability and Technology
At a special meeting held Aug. 27, the Kent State Board of Trustees Finance and Administration Committee authorized a resolution that will permit the issuance of contracts and the beginning of construction on the building’s foundation. The committee action, passed by a unanimous vote, also caps the cost of the project at $17,750,000.

For the Fall 2013 Semester, Kent State University has set a new record, attracting the biggest and highest-achieving freshman class at the Kent Campus in the university’s 103-year history. With the release of the university’s official 15th day census data for the Fall 2013 Semester, Kent State reports the total number of first-time, full-time freshmen enrolled at the Kent Campus is 4,314.
