Students from Kent State’s Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative Win American Planning Association of Ohio Award
Graduate students from Kent State University’s Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative, the combined home of the urban design graduate program and the public service activities of the College of Architecture and Environmental Design, won the Excellence in Student Planning Award from the American Planning Association of Ohio (APA-Ohio) on Sept. 27.

Name of the New Kent State University Esplanade to Honor University President Lefton
The Kent State University Esplanade will be named the Lester A. Lefton Esplanade honoring Kent State President Lefton. The announcement was made Friday, Oct. 4, by Jane Murphy Timken, chair of the Kent State Board of Trustees, at a community event held at the new University Esplanade arch near Main and Willow streets in Kent.

Kent State Student Awarded Ohio Space Grant Consortium Scholarship
Chelsea Atkins, a junior aeronautics major at Kent State University, was recently awarded an Ohio Space Grant Consortium Junior Scholarship for the 2013-2014 academic year. Atkins, from Detroit, is one of approximately 100 students from 25 Ohio universities and colleges to receive this scholarship.

Former Congressman Louis Stokes Named Kent State’s New President’s Ambassador
Kent State University President Lester A. Lefton has named former Congressman Louis Stokes as the 2013-2014 Kent State President’s Ambassador. The President’s Ambassadorship, a one-year, part-time appointment that begins in the fall, is designed to bring distinguished local minority leaders and professionals to share their knowledge and experience with the Kent State community.

Kent State Professor to Discuss Alzheimer’s and Obesity at Medical Innovation Summit
A Kent State University faculty member whose research found that weight loss after bariatric surgery can improve brain functioning will speak at the Cleveland Clinic’s 2013 Medical Innovation Summit in October. John Gunstad, Ph.D., associate professor in Kent State’s Department of Psychology, will speak at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 15, on a panel discussing “Diet, Obesity and Alzheimer’s Disease.”

Kent State Orchestra Introduces New Music Director and Continues 2013-2014 Concert Season
The Kent State University Hugh A. Glauser School of Music Orchestra continues its 2013-2014 season with a second subscription series performance on Sunday, Nov. 17, at 3:30 p.m. in University Auditorium at Cartwright Hall. Cartwright Hall is located at 650 Hilltop Drive on the Kent Campus, with free parking located off of Terrace Drive.

Disabled American Veterans’ Mobile Service Office to Visit Kent State, Oct. 22
The Disabled American Veterans’ Mobile Service Office will be making a stop at Kent State University on Oct. 22. As part of its tour of college campuses, the Mobile Service Office program will be outside of the Schwartz Center on the university’s campus in Kent from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

MEDIA ADVISORY: Metro Life Flight Makes Helicopter Visit to Kent State on Oct. 22
Metro Life Flight, the first air medical program in the area, will have one of its helicopters visit Kent State on Oct. 22, landing on the Kent State University Esplanade. After a nearly yearlong planning process, Kent State’s College of Nursing and the MetroHealth System have collaborated to now offer clinical experiences aboard Metro Life Flight to Kent State graduate nursing students in the acute care nurse practitioner concentration.

CEO of Kent State’s College of Podiatric Medicine Has Died, Interim Dean Named
Thomas V. Melillo, D.P.M., who served as chief executive officer of Kent State University’s College of Podiatric Medicine, died Oct. 22 after a battle with cancer. Bryan Caldwell, D.P.M., will serve as interim dean of the college.

Kent State University at Tuscarawas Dean to Leave Post in July
Gregg L. Andrews, Ph.D., dean and chief administrative officer of Kent State University at Tuscarawas, announced he will resign as dean effective July 1, 2014. He plans to accept an assignment to become the special assistant to the associate provost and Regional College dean at Kent State and will teach at Kent State Tuscarawas.

Kent State University Associate Professor of Mathematics Beverly Reed, Ph.D.,was recently honored with the Kenneth Cummins Outstanding Mathematics Teacher Award by the Ohio Council of Teachers of Mathematics, an affiliate of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Each year, the council chooses one post-secondary educator for the award.

Kent State University will hold its annual Veterans Day observance on Thursday, Nov. 7, at 11 a.m. at Risman Plaza. The outdoor program will include a flag-raising ceremony conducted by a joint color guard from the Army and Air Force ROTC programs, and remarks from Kent State President Lester A. Lefton.
