Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson Comes to Kent State for Presidential Speaker Series

Neil deGrasse Tyson, astrophysicist and the Frederick P. Rose Director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History, will speak at the third Kent State University Presidential Speaker Series on Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. in the Kent Student Center Ballroom.

Before the fall semester went into full swing on Aug. 26, new students were invited to participate in Welcome Weekend, a four-day orientation program that ran Aug. 22-25 and helped acclimate students to the Kent State University community. The event served as an opportunity for students to transition into the university environment and learn about the academic and social opportunities that exist at Kent State.

The residence hall move-in process can be stressful for both students and parents at the start of a new school year. To make the experience more fun and welcoming, the Kent InterHall Council sponsors the Movers and Groovers program. Each fall during freshman move-in day, Kent State faculty, staff and students volunteer to assist incoming freshmen get settled in their new university accommodations.

Kent State University congratulates its newest graduates. Summer 2013 commencement ceremonies for the Kent Campus were held Aug. 17 at the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center (MAC Center). Kent State conferred 1,593 degrees, including 836 bachelor’s degrees, 455 master’s degrees, 83 doctoral degrees, 198 associate degrees and 21 educational specialist degrees.

However, researchers Jacob Barkley and Andrew Lepp, faculty members in the College of Education, Health and Human Services at Kent State University, linked high cell phone use to poor fitness in college students.

Kent State University student Heather Wells was crowned Miss Ohio 2013 at the competition that took place at the Renaissance Theater in Mansfield, Ohio, on June 22. Wells, who is from Warren, Ohio, competed as Miss Montgomery County against 23 other contestants.
