College of Public Health Celebrates National Public Health Week with Series of Events

Public Health Fair
The College of Public Health is sponsoring its first public health fair Monday, April 4, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Kent Student Center’s second floor lobby. The fair is hosted by the university’s Public Health Student Alliance. Free health screenings and massages will be available, along with volunteer, internship, job and other networking opportunities with key organizations and agencies within the public health sector.

All attendees will have the chance to win prizes from local businesses and supporters, such as a $75 gift certificate from Walden Inn and Spa or an autographed basketball from the 2011 Mid-American Conference (MAC) champion Kent State men’s basketball team.

Heart 2 Heart Talk with Candice Monroe
Heart 2 Heart Talk with Candice Monroe is scheduled for Monday, April 4, at 6 p.m. in the Kent Student Center Kiva. Monroe will focus on how a heart transplant saved her life when she was 15 years old. The event is part of National Public Health Week and National Donate Life Month.

Refreshments will be served prior to the event. All those who attend will be entered to win prizes from local and supporting businesses.

Movie Night Featuring And the Band Played On
The College of Public Health and the Public Health Student Alliance are hosting a movie night featuring And the Band Played On, a drama about politics, people and the AIDS epidemic, Tuesday, April 5, at 7 p.m. in Lowry Hall, room 143.

Free Buffalo Wild Wings and drinks will be available for those who attend, and there will be a drawing for prizes from local businesses and supporters.

Career Info Session
The College of Public Health, the Office of Diversity and the Area Health Education Center (AHEC) are sponsoring an information session about careers in Public Health Wednesday, April 6, at 6:30 p.m. in the Kent Student Center, room 317. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates 250,000 public health jobs nationwide and 10,000 new jobs in Ohio will be available by 2020. High school students are encouraged to attend.
