Since 2004, the tallgrass prairie near the Student Recreation and Wellness Center has been burned for maintenance. The burn, which occurred this year on May 4, doesn't damage the plants as the roots are protected deep under the earth. Instead, the fire clears away dead leaves and stems, allowing growth for the summer. The Kent City Fire Department controls the fire every spring.
