Kent State University has been awarded a training grant in the amount of $2,756,719 by the National Science Foundation (NSF) under its Integrative Graduation Education and Research Training (IGERT) program. This is the first IGERT grant to be awarded to Kent State. The grant, which is funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, runs through 2014.

The Kent State University Gospel Choir and Step Team performed its annual holiday concert Friday, Dec. 11 at 7:30 p.m. in Carol A. Cartwright Hall on the Kent Campus. The concert was free. No tickets were required. Free will donations were accepted.

Kent State University at Stark senior biology major Jacqueline Dillard combines her love of science and passion for art to create scientific illustrations that have gained national attention. One of her more recent drawings was featured on the cover of the September issue of the Journal of Paleontology.

Deciding what school to attend is hard enough, but it can be even harder for military veterans who face different challenges than traditional college freshmen. For assistance, veterans can refer to G.I. Jobs 2010 list of Military Friendly Schools. Kent State University is part of this list that honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace America’s veterans as students.
Edwin Colon Zayas, recipient of a National Heritage Fellowship - the United States’ highest honor in folk and traditional arts - kicks off the 2009 Kent State Folk Festival at the Kent Stage.

The 43rd Kent State Folk Festival kicked off seven days of performances with a concert featuring Puerto Rican musical treasure Edwin Colón Zayas and friends.
Dr. Chris Woolverton, professor of biology, epidemiology and environmental health, works in the Biosafety Training Lab in Cunningham Hall.

Kent State University has been named a Designated Training Facility of the National Institutes of Health’s National Biosafety and Biocontainment Training Program (NBBTP), becoming only the second facility in the country to receive this designation.

Numbers do not lie: 454-259, a .637 winning percentage, six national tournament berths and two 100-match winners. Not bad for Wrestling Head Coach Jim Andrassy’s first recruiting class. And not bad for 2008 MAC Coach of the Year Andrassy either.

More than 400 alumni, friends, faculty, staff and students celebrated the 100th anniversary of Kent State University’s founding and participated in launch of the university’s $250 million Centennial Campaign during an Oct. 8 dinner. The event featured speeches, a historical video and a spectacular performance by more than 110 students.

As a kickoff to the Centennial Celebration and Homecoming 2009, President Lester A. Lefton and Linda Lefton, along with help from some students, unveiled the Bronze Squirrel in the Kent Student Center on Oct. 7. It is a bronze version of the Centennial Squirrel that has been purchased and donated back to the university by the Leftons. The Bronze Squirrel is located to the left of the main staircase and fountain on the first floor level of the student center.
