Jeff Duncan, former associate head coach at Purdue University, was named the new head baseball coach at Kent State on June 25, as announced by Kent State Director of Athletics Joel Nielsen.
The School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Kent State University finished in eighth place in the overall national championship of the Hearst Journalism Awards Program. The school also earned seventh place rankings in both the photojournalism and multimedia categories. It will receive medallions for each award.
Kent State University faculty, staff and students collected 299,552 pounds of recyclables during the 2013 RecycleMania challenge. This year, 523 colleges and universities across the United States and Canada participated in the eight-week competition that ranks schools based on how much recycling, trash and food waste is collected.

Destination Kent State has returned! The June and July advising and registration program is a one-and-a-half-day experience that includes an overnight stay in a residence hall. Students are encouraged to invite family members to participate in the program. The students explore important topics, including the differences between high school and college, and navigating the university and properly preparing to be a college student. Family members learn about essential tools for a successful college experience, such as financial aid, as well as survival and support skills for being the parent/family member of a college student.
The Mid-American Conference (MAC) presented Kent State University with the Reese Trophy for the fifth straight year for men's all-sports excellence during the MAC Honors Dinner at the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel. The Kent State Golden Flashes have now won eight Reese Trophies dating back to 2000.

The Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine, formerly the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine, celebrated its first official Commencement as a college of Kent State on May 16, 2013. The Class of 2013 graduated 102 podiatric students from Kent State’s College of Podiatric Medicine. The ceremony was held in the University Auditorium at Cartwright Hall on the Kent Campus in Kent, Ohio.
Kent State University aeronautics student Ryan Weber, from Chardon, Ohio, won the top spot in the power-on landing competition at the National Intercollegiate Flying Association’ s Safety and Flight Evaluation Conference (SAFECON 2013) in Columbus, Ohio, on May 11. SAFECON is a national competition that brings together more than 300 students from 30 colleges and universities from across the country to vie to be the national champions for both team and pilot honors. The competition develops and advances aviation education through a strong emphasis on aviation safety.
The Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) named a team of Kent State University students as the second-place finisher in the national PRSSA 2013 Bateman Case Study Competition. The team consisted of five Kent State seniors majoring in public relations, and its team name was KSU Blue.
