The Kent State University School of Fashion Design and Merchandising announces that School Director J.R. Campbell and Associate Professor of Fashion Design Vincent Quevedo were collaboratively awarded the “International Artist of the Year” award at the 2010 Fashion Art Biennale in Seoul, South Korea, for their piece “DMZ,” which stands for demilitarized zone.

Kent State University Director of Athletics Joel Nielsen introduced Darrell Hazell as the Golden Flashes’ 20th head football coach at an afternoon news conference held Dec. 20.

Kent State University students took a break from studying for final exams to enjoy the winter weather and relieve some stress by having a snowball fight. Information about the snowball fight was posted on Kent State's Facebook page, encouraging students to come to Manchester Field, participate in the winter fun and be sure to bring their snow boots.

More than 150 librarians, educators, friends and supporters gathered on Dec. 1 at the Cleveland Botanical Garden to celebrate a unique educational partnership between the School of Library and Information Science at Kent State University and the libraries of 19 educational, medical and cultural institutions in the University Circle area of Cleveland.

Kent State University ranks first among Northeast Ohio universities for enrolling student-veterans, according to a new report. The state of Ohio’s December report on the GI Promise ranks Kent State third overall (behind Ohio State University and the University of Cincinnati) in the state for enrolling student veterans and tied for second for the largest number of student-veterans who are receiving GI Promise scholarships.

The Princeton Review, a publication of college rankings based on how students rank their schools, recognized the Kent State University's College of Business Administration and Graduate School of Management as one of the top 300 outstanding educational institutions for business students.

Grant funding will open kitchen doors, feed Ohioans.

In a November appearance at Kent State University, Robert Egger, founder of DC Central Kitchen and The Campus Kitchens Project, challenged Kent State students to fight hunger locally and applauded their efforts to bring a Campus Kitchen to the Kent Campus this spring. The kitchen will be the first in Ohio and part of a network of 30 schools working to fight hunger across the country. The Campus Kitchen at Kent State will receive $15,000 from the national Campus Kitchens Project, which will help the kitchen open and begin operations.

One of America’s favorite seafood is shrimp. Did you know that they fossilize as well? Rodney Feldmann, professor emeritus, and Carrie Schweitzer, associate professor, from Kent State University’s Department of Geology report on the oldest fossil shrimp known to date in the world. The creature in stone is as much as 360 million years old and was found in Oklahoma. Even the muscles of the fossil are preserved. Their study will be published in Journal of Crustacean Biology.

After taking in a lot of turkey on Thanksgiving, spend the following day taking in sports at Kent State University. On Friday, Nov. 26, Kent State will host home games for both football and men’s basketball.

The Kent State University team responsible for the successful nomination of the site of the May 4, 1970, shootings to the National Register of Historic Places was recently honored with a 2010 Ohio Historic Preservation Merit Award. The awards are presented annually by the Ohio Historic Preservation Office.
