The Kent State University community welcomes back Kent State students as the university begins its 2012-2013 academic year and offers many events and activities for new and returning students.
<p>Hiroshi Yokoyama, Ph.D., is director of Kent State University’s Liquid Crystal Institute, which received a $3 million grant from the Ohio Third Frontier Commission for new concept devices based on nanoscale engineering of polymer-liquid crystal interface.</p>

The Ohio Third Frontier Commission has approved a $3 million award to Kent State University. The award is part of the more than $21 million in grants recommended by the commission through the Ohio Third Frontier Open Innovation Incentive and the Ohio Third Frontier Innovation Platform Program to support innovation activities in the state.

Kent State University congratulates its newest graduates. The university held its summer commencement ceremonies at 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 11, at the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center (MAC Center). Kent State conferred 1,590 degrees, including 942 bachelor’s degrees, 391 master’s degrees, 79 doctoral degrees, 163 associate degrees and 15 educational specialist degrees.

Kent State University will host a symbolic ribbon-tying event on Wednesday, Aug. 8, at 11 a.m. to celebrate the establishment of the new Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine, formerly known as the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine.

Fourteen Kent State University students recently traveled to Germany for a three-week education-abroad program. The students gained cultural, democratic and social experiences while learning a little bit more about themselves in the process.

Three associate professors from Kent State University’s Shannon Rodgers and Jerry Silverman School of Fashion Design and Merchandising donated their time to design and create more than 30 costumes for a local dance troupe headed to London for the 2012 Summer Olympics.
<p>The Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine has officially become the Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine, effective July 1. The college was established in 1916 and is one of the largest and most respected podiatric medical education institutions in the country and the only accredited podiatry school in Ohio.<br /> </p>

The Kent State baseball team made its 12th NCAA tournament appearance this year and advanced to the Super Regional for the first time this season. The team also played in the College World Series for the first time in program history, which dates back to 1915. The Golden Flashes edged out top seed Florida in its second game at the College World Series.
