Area Entrepreneurs Offer Real-World Lessons and Advice to Students through Entrepreneurs-In-Residence Program
While it may have looked and sounded like just another business discussion, it was actually a class in session in Kent State University’s John S. Brinzo Entrepreneurial Lab at the College of Business Administration’s Center for Entrepreneurship and Business Innovation. Students took notes and learned from their mentors, who were not college professors but entrepreneurs from the community offering expertise and experience culled straight from the real world.

Fashion School at Kent State University Designated as Ohio Center of Excellence
Ohio Board of Regents Chancellor Jim Petro, joined by the Kent State University Board of Trustees, today named The Shannon Rodgers and Jerry Silverman School of Fashion Design and Merchandising at Kent State an Ohio Center of Excellence in Cultural and Societal Transformation. Ranked as the 3rd best fashion school in the U.S. and 13th in the world, the Fashion School at Kent State has trained its students by using a forward-looking and rigorous curriculum with an aggressive approach in the use of digital technologies for 28 years.

Governor Appoints Richard H. Marsh to Kent State Board of Trustees
Gov. John Kasich has appointed Richard H. Marsh of Akron to serve on the Kent State University Board of Trustees. Marsh’s term is from July 27, 2011, through May 16, 2020.

Governor Appoints Student to Kent State Board of Trustees
Chelsea M. Knowles of Hudson, Ohio, has been appointed by Gov. John Kasich to serve as a student member of the Kent State University Board of Trustees. Her term began Sept. 20, 2011, and ends May 16, 2013.

Help Crooked River Adventures Clean Up the Crooked River Sept. 24
Crooked River Adventures, operated by the Department of Recreational Services at Kent State University, opened last year with a mission to be mindful of the environmental concerns of the local community. Keeping true to its promise, the livery will host the third annual “Clean Up the Cuyahoga” on Saturday, Sept. 24.

JobsOhio’s Mark Kvamme Visits Kent State University’s Centennial Research Park
Kent State University received Mark Kvamme, the newly installed interim chief investment officer and president of JobsOhio, on Tuesday, July 26. JobsOhio is the private economic development agency established by Gov. John Kasich and the Ohio legislature. Kvamme visited the university’s Centennial Research Park and three Portage County manufacturing firms that are all licensees of technology developed through research at Kent State’s Liquid Crystal Institute®.

Kent State Achieves Highest-Ever Enrollment and Welcomes Largest Freshman Class to Kent Campus
Kent State University has surpassed last year’s record enrollment number to achieve a new all-time high with the release of the university’s official 15th day census data. Kent State announced a 1.98 percent increase in enrollment for the fall 2011 semester across its eight campuses.

Kent State Breaks Fundraising Record for Third Straight Year
For the first time in its history, supporters to Kent State University have contributed more than $40 million in one year, breaking the institution’s fundraising record for the third year in a row. During the fiscal year ending June 30, private contributions to the public research university reached $42.1 million, beating last year’s total by more than $2 million.

Kent State Dedicates New Math Emporium on Sept. 13
Members of the Kent State University community will gather Sept. 13 at 4 p.m. to celebrate the opening of the new Kent State University Math Emporium, a state-of-the-art computerized learning center designed to help students learn math. Located on the second floor of the Kent State University Library, the Math Emporium launched this fall with the start of classes on Aug. 29.

Kent State Executive MBA Students Experience Chinese Culture and Business Practices with International Business Trip
Thirty-two students enrolled in Kent State University’s Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA) program had the opportunity to take their classroom abroad when they traveled to China as part of their studies on global business. The unique learning experience exposed the students to China’s culture and the business practices of companies that operate internationally.

Kent State Fashion School Director Campbell and Professor Quevedo Honored by Rep. Kathleen Clyde
State Rep. Kathleen Clyde recently visited the Fashion School at Kent State University to honor J.R. Campbell, the school’s director, and Vincent Quevedo, associate professor of fashion design, for receiving the “International Artist of the Year” Award at the 2010 Fashion Biennale in Seoul, Korea. The unique piece co-designed by Campbell and Quevedo titled “DMZ” garnered them the highly coveted award.

Kent State University to Sign Articulation Agreement with Stark State College
Ohio’s second largest public university is partnering with an associate degree college to simplify and guarantee the transfer process between the two institutions. Recognizing the need to facilitate the transfer of students from Stark State College to Kent State University to pursue and achieve their educational goals, Kent State President Lester A. Lefton and Stark State President John O’Donnell will sign an institutional articulation agreement on Thursday, July 7, at 3:30 p.m. at Kent State’s Urban Conference Room, located in the Executive Offices on the second floor of the Kent State University Library in Kent.

Kent State University’s Piano Institute Presents Its Sixth Annual Gala Concert and Series of Performances, July 17-26
The 2011 Piano Institute, in association with the Piano Division of the Hugh A. Glauser School of Music at Kent State University, will present a series of concerts and master classes from July 17-27 at various locations on the campus of the university. The six-year-old program is a highly intensive festival for talented piano students in grades 7 – 12. The July 26 gala concert at Severance Hall’s Reinberger Chamber Hall in Cleveland will feature 11 highly gifted pre-collegiate pianists from around the world.

The African Community Theatre at Kent State University will be holding auditions for its 2011-2012 season production of “Stagolee: A Black Folktale.” This ensemble production captures the folklore of African-Americans interspersed with music, song and dance.

Allen is a professor of communication and associate dean in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Colorado Denver.
