Kent State Partners with the Cleveland Clinic on Education Initiatives

Kent State University, Ohio’s second largest public university, is teaming up with Cleveland Clinic, one of the nation’s largest and most respected academic medical centers. Kent State has become the latest institutional partner with the Cleveland Clinic on education initiatives. The two institutions have signed a Memorandum of Understanding, formally creating this new partnership.
At the center of this partnership is NEOREMA, Northeast Ohio Research Education Medicine Alliance. NEOREMA is a pipeline initiative focused specifically on underrepresented high school students from communities in Northeast Ohio. The high school students participating in NEOREMA have an interest in and an aptitude for a medical- or research-based career.

“These students are among the best and brightest in Northeast Ohio and are being groomed for careers in biomedical sciences or the health professions,” said Robert G. Frank, Kent State’s provost and senior vice president for academic affairs.

“NEOREMA is designed to engage underrepresented high school students throughout their journey to becoming doctors, scientists or health professionals,” explained Rosalind Strickland, senior director of Cleveland Clinic’s Office of Civic Education Initiatives. “Our goal is to not only impact the lives of our students, but also to grow Northeast Ohio.”

For the past five years, Kent State’s College of Arts and Sciences has been collaborating with Cleveland Clinic, specifically with the Office of Civic Education Initiatives in support of its Summer Internship Program and the eXpressions™ program, which effectively uses the scientific research conducted during the summer to help a wider audience of high school students gain a better understanding of science through language arts, visual art and mathematics. Kent State joins Cleveland State University, Cuyahoga Community College and Oberlin College as institutional partners to the Cleveland Clinic on this latest pipeline initiative.
