Football Opens at Home

Rain, lightning, turnovers and penalties put a damper on Kent State's home opener Saturday night as the Golden Flashes fell to Louisiana 20-12 at Dix Stadium. In the first half, the Flashes were plagued by nine penalties for 90 yards and a pair of costly turnovers, creating a 17-7 deficit at the break. The Kent State defense kept the game within reach, but two more second half turnovers kept the offense from picking up any momentum.

A first quarter pass by Spencer Keith (Little Rock, Ark.) sailed deep and into the arms of Louisiana's Lionel Stokes, who weaved his way through the KSU offense, going 63 yards into the end zone.
 
An interception by Josh Pleasant (Germantown, Md.) set up the Flashes first score.  Keith tossed a swing pass to Jacquise Terry (Phenix City, Ala,), who scampered six yards into the right side of the end zone to tie the game 7-7.

Starting a second quarter drive on their own four yard line, disaster struck the Flashes again.  Intending to hand off to his tailback, Keith hit fullback Tim Erjavec (Willowick, Ohio) with the edge of the ball, which jarred loose and was recovered by the Cajuns at the one.  On third-and-goal, Qyenda Griffin found the front corner of the end zone on a sweep to the left side.

A pair of 15-yard personal fouls on Louisiana's final drive of the half led to a Cajuns' field goal and a 10-point lead.

Lightning with 9:13 left in the third quarter delayed the game for an hour and twenty-two minutes.

Two plays after the delay, junior linebacker C.J. Malauulu (Oceanside, Calif.) forced an intentional grounding, giving the Flashes a safety.  Another strong defensive stand gave the Flashes the ball back in Cajun territory and led to a Freddy Cortez (Fort Meade, Fla.) field goal.

Another Kent State fumble on a handoff in its own territory led to a Louisiana field goal to make it an eight-point lead.

The Flashes' final drive began at its own two yard line and went 40 yards, before another fumble sealed the road victory for Louisiana.

Kent State returns to action Saturday, Sept. 17 against at Kansas State.
