Athletics Events Planned for Homecoming 2011

Intercollegiate Athletics
Kent State University and its Department of Athletics have a jam-packed Homecoming schedule leading right up to the game with Miami University on Saturday, Oct. 15, at 3:30 p.m. at Dix Stadium.

On Friday, Oct. 14, be sure to check out the volleyball team as the Kent State Golden Flashes battle Toledo at 7 p.m. in the MAC Center. The men’s and women’s basketball teams will be on hand beginning at approximately 7:45 p.m. to sign autographs and take photographs with fans in the lobby.

The volleyball game and autograph session leads up to the program portion of “MACC Madness” – the annual tip-off of basketball season, which is slated to begin on center court at approximately 9 p.m. The evening’s festivities include player introductions, three-point and slam dunk contests, free giveaways for fans and a DJ playing music. In addition, the fan that brings the biggest group to “MACC Madness” will win the use of the suite for one men’s basketball game.

As usual, the Fan Experience and Dix Stadium tailgate lots will open at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, with the “Flash Walk” slated for 1:15 p.m. in the Kent State Field House as head football coach Darrell Hazell and select Kent State players will address the crowd before taking on the RedHawks.

Be sure to get to the stadium early for the “Hear the Thunder at Homecoming” promotion, as the first 15,000 fans in attendance will receive a set of Golden Flashes thundersticks.

During the game, the Athletic Department will unveil the new Starner Victory Bell as well as the George Jenkins and Jim Phelan Hall of Fame Plaza in the south end of Dix Stadium.

Buzz and Marilyn Starner have long shown an affinity for Kent State Athletics, including their endowing of the Starner Speaker Series in 2001. Their latest act of generosity – the Starner Victory Bell – will be rung after each Golden Flashes victory, and will travel to all of the various Kent State venues throughout the year.

Longtime supporters of Kent State Athletics, Jenkins and Phelan have graciously donated a compiled $400,000 toward the Football Enhancement Fund. Upon its completion, the Hall of Fame Plaza will honor Kent State's football greats and will include Varsity "K" Hall of Fame inductees, retired jersey honorees and NFL standouts.

The volleyball squad caps off the weekend with a 7:30 p.m. match Saturday night against Ball State. Bring your football ticket for free admission to the MAC Center.
