Kent State Beats Akron, 35-3
Kent State rolled to its third straight win in convincing fashion on Saturday with a 35-3 win over rival Akron at InfoCision Stadium. The victory also gives the Golden Flashes bragging rights to the coveted wagon wheel trophy for a second consecutive year.
Kent State (4-6; 3-3 MAC) stays in contention in a tight Mid-American Conference East Division race now trailing Ohio (4-2 MAC) by one game and Temple (4-3 MAC) by a half game with two games remaining for the Golden Flashes.
A six-point, 9-3 halftime lead was broken open on Kent State's first possession of the third quarter. The Golden Flashes covered 44 yards in seven plays - all on the ground - capped off by a diving one-yard plunge over the top from freshman running back Trayion Durham (Cincinnati, Ohio). Durham went for a career high 107 yards in the game adding two touchdowns. His second score came in the waning seconds of the third quarter and completed a 20-0 stanza for Kent State that extend the margin to 29-3.
The lead would be more than enough for a dominating Golden Flashes defense that limited the Zips (1-9; 0-6 MAC) to just 104 total yards and 0-7 on third down in the second half. Reigning MAC Defensive Player of the Year, Roosevelt Nix (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) was the spark plug of the effort. The sophomore defensive lineman posted six total tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and broke up two passes while causing havoc for the front four of Akron all day long. Junior linebacker Luke Batton (Macedonia, Ohio) added a team high eight tackles for Kent State.
Coming off its most complete offensive performance last week in a win over Central Michigan, the Golden Flashes started things off were they left them. Kent State took the opening kickoff and drove 70 yards in five plays for a 6-0 advantage. Junior quarterback Spencer Keith (Little Rock, Ark) completed the drive with a 30-yard pass down the middle to senior wide receiver Chris Gilbert (Huntersville, N.C.). Keith finished the game 11-16 for 115 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed four times for a total of 54 yards, including a career long 59 yard scamper that set up the Durham's second touchdown.
Sandwiched by the two Durham touchdown runs was a six-yard scoring pass from Keith to junior fullback Tim Erjavec (Willowick, Ohio). Senior running back Jacquise Terry (Phenix City, Ala.) added the final touchdown for Kent State scoring on an 11-yard run in the fourth quarter. Junior Freddy Cortez accounted for the other points, including a 46-yard field goal in the second quarter (Fort Meade, Fla.).
Just two wins shy of becoming bowl eligible, Kent State returns to action at home next Saturday, Nov. 19 for Senior Day vs Eastern Michigan at 1:00 p.m. For ticket information contact the Kent State Ticket office at 330-672-2244.
