Men’s Basketball Team
Wins ESPN-Televised
Season Opener,
70-60

Intercollegiate Athletics
Kent State University (1-0) began its 96th season of men’s basketball in front of a national televised ESPN audience on Tuesday as the Golden Flashes beat West Virginia University (1-1), 70-60. The game was part of ESPN’s fourth annual College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon in which the network is broadcasting 25 straight hours of college basketball.

One of the most anticipated seasons in school history, the Golden Flashes 2011-12 campaign started off with a new leader on the sidelines, but one well-familiar to the highly successful program. First year head coach Rob Senderoff has taken over as the front man for Kent State after spending seven of his previous 15 years in the coaching profession on the Golden Flashes staff.

Senderoff is set to guide a group of nine returning letterwinners, including four starters, who helped lead the team to a 25-12 record while claiming a second straight Mid-American Conference (MAC) regular season title and National Invitation Tournament (NIT) quarterfinal appearance along the way. The returnees for 2011-12 accounted for nearly 85 percent of the offensive production and 80 percent of the team’s rebounding from a year ago.

In its lone exhibition game, Kent State defeated Rochester College (Mich.) last Monday 76-63. Senior forward Justin Greene had 13 points as did sophomore Mark Henniger to lead the team. Greene, the 2011 MAC Player of the Year, averaged a team best 15.4 points, 8.3 rebounds and 1.4 blocks last year. Junior forward Chris Evans added 12 points in his first game wearing a Kent State uniform. Evans was a junior college First Team All-American last season.

West Virginia began its season on Friday night with a 78-71 win over Oral Roberts. The Mountaineers welcome seven newcomers this season while returning starting guard Truck Bryant and starting forward Kevin Jones.

  • Kent State is the only school in the country to return three of its conference’s major award winners in 2011-12. (Justin Greene, MAC Player of the Year; Michael Porrini, MAC Defensive Player of the Year; and Carlton Guyton, MAC Sixth-MAC of the Year).
  • Kent State is making its second straight appearance in the ESPN Tip-Off Marathon. The Golden Flashes defeated Robert Morris 62-59 at home in the 8 a.m. time slot last season
  • In the last 10 years, Kent State has won five MAC regular season titles (2002, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2011). No other team in the league has claimed more than one, and five have not won at all.
  • Dating back to last season, this is the fifth consecutive game for Kent State on the ESPN family of networks. The Golden Flashes made a MAC record 10 appearances with ESPN last season, owning a 6-4 record
