Setting Sail at Tall Ships Festival

Kent State University was a proud supporter of the Tall Ships Festival held for four days in July at the Port of Cleveland. The festival featured 13 replica historic vessels. The university sponsored the festival’s hospitality village that featured signage with Kent State’s name and logo prominently displayed.

The university held two events during the Tall Ships Festival. On July 9, the university hosted an executive luncheon and sail away event in conjunction with Kent State’s Center for Corporate and Professional Development. André Thornton, president and CEO of ASW Global and Kent State’s recently named President’s Ambassador, delivered welcome remarks to the invited guests aboard the Denis Sullivan, a 137-foot, three-masted schooner.

About 150 alumni gathered on July 10 for a dockside reception. Attendees mixed and mingled with other Kent State graduates and were greeted by Kent State President Lester A. Lefton. Other university administrators in attendance included Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Robert G. Frank, Vice President for University Relations Iris Harvey, Athletic Director Joel Nielsen, Dean Jeffrey Nolte of Kent State University at Salem and East Liverpool, Dean Timothy Moerland of the College of Arts and Sciences and Dean Stan Wearden of the College of Communication and Information. During the evening reception, alumni had the opportunity to take a self-guided tour of the Roald Amundsen, a German brig used for sailing training.
