12th Annual Symposium on Democracy, April 28-29
Kent State University presents the 12th Annual Symposium on Democracy. Held in commemoration of the events of May 4, 1970, the symposium takes place April 28-29 in Oscar Ritchie Hall and is sponsored by the university’s Department of History, Department of Pan-African Studies and Women’s Studies Program, with funding from the Office of the President and the College of Arts and Sciences.

Congress Passes Resolution Commemorating May 4, 1970
By a vote of 413-0, the House of Representatives unanimously passed a resolution commemorating the 40th anniversary of the May 4, 1970, shootings at Kent State University. Rep. Tim Ryan, who serves the 17th District of Ohio, introduced the resolution on May 5, 2010. His district includes Kent, Ohio.

Crooked River Adventures in Kent Reopens With More Trips and Tubing

On July 1, 2010, Dr. Sonia Alemagno, professor of health policy and management and interim associate dean for the College of Public Health at Kent State University, will assume the role of interim vice president for research. She will succeed Dr. John West, who will return to a faculty position.

Kent City Police Seek Assistance in Locating Suspects
Kent City Police are investigating an armed robbery that occurred off campus at approximately 9:11 p.m. Tuesday evening. A Kent State student reported being robbed at gunpoint on Lincoln Street near the Dartmouth Place Apartments by three males. The suspects are described as one white male and two black males between the ages of 18-23 wearing jeans, white winter coats and toboggan hats. The suspects fled in a red, older model Pontiac vehicle. No injuries were reported.

The Kent State University School of Art's Downtown Gallery is pleased to present LIFE FORCE: PAINTINGS BY NANCY SEIBERT. Kent State Dedicates May 4 Site and New May 4 Walking Tour
As part of the university’s activities marking the 40th commemoration of the May 4, 1970, shootings, Kent State University will host a dedication ceremony for the historic May 4 site’s listing on the National Register of Historic Places and the opening of the new May 4 Walking Tour. The dedication will take place Monday, May 3, at 3 p.m. beginning in Room 214 of Oscar Ritchie Hall, located at 225 Terrace Drive in Kent, Ohio.

Kent State Dedicates Sculpture Walk, April 13
On Wednesday, April 13, Kent State University will hold a dedication ceremony for the Kent State University Sculpture Walk. The sculpture walk currently consists of four works of art along the University Esplanade, the pedestrian walkway through campus, with plans to add more pieces on campus and extending into the city of Kent.

Intergovernmental collaboration provides opportunities for cost savings, economic development and local government service improvement. Kent State University’s Center for Public Administration and Public Policy has developed a comprehensive inventory of more than 240 collaborative projects that are actively happening or are being explored as ideas for possible implementation in Northeast Ohio.

Members of the Kent community can now admire and purchase student artwork as a result of the entrepreneurial efforts of three Kent State University students. Entrepreneurship majors Sara Gans, Brittany Gorrell and Brittani Peterson launched a student art shop in the Kent Student Center, room 221 this semester.

Kent State is First to Receive Charter from Entrepreneurship Honor Society
Sigma Nu Tau Entrepreneurship Honor Society has announced that Kent State University is the first university in the country to be presented with a charter to operate a chapter of its honor society. The charter was presented on April 18 by Dr. Nancy J. Church, president and executive director of Sigma Nu Tau, to Kent State’s Julie Messing and Karla Mendoza who were installed as faculty advisor and faculty secretary, respectively, of the Kent State Chapter.

On April 7, Kent State University will host a screening of the documentary film “Voices From El-Sayed,” which tells the story of world’s largest Deaf community located in an Israeli Bedoiun village. Director and writer Oded Adomi Leshem will be on hand to discuss the film.

Kent State Presents Events Marking 40th Anniversary of May 4
Kent State University is presenting a wide range of events to mark the 40th anniversary of May 4, 1970. On that date, a student protest against the Vietnam War and the presence of the Ohio National Guard on the Kent State campus ended in tragedy when guardsmen shot and killed four and wounded nine Kent State students.

Kent State Presents Fair Housing Lecture on April 12
On Tuesday, April 12, Kent State University presents a fair housing lecture. This month is Fair Housing Month, celebrated across the country each April to commemorate the passage of the Fair Housing Act. The purpose of the April 12 lecture is to educate Kent State students, the general public and housing providers about their fair housing rights and responsibilities.

Kent State Reports 6.57 Percent Increase in Summer 2011 Enrollment
Kent State University announced today that enrollment for summer 2011 is up 6.57 percent across its eight-campus system. The university reports 14,467 students were enrolled in its two summer sessions, compared to 13,575 for summer 2010, for a net increase of 892 students.

Kent State University researchers are part of a team of international scientists who have discovered antihelium-4, the most massive antinucleus known to date. This new discovery is the antimatter partner of the helium-4 nucleus, also called the alpha particle. Helium-4 is the normal form of helium, the second most abundant element in the universe after hydrogen.

A pair of Kent State University athletic teams were recognized May 17 in Indianapolis for their excellence in academic progress and retention by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), as the Kent State Golden Flashes women’s cross country and baseball teams were among the top 10 percent in their respective sports for the multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) from 2006-10.

Officials at Kent State University are projecting a record freshman class at the university’s Kent Campus for fall 2011. Based on the number of applications and the number of new, incoming freshman students who have attended or have signed up for Destination Kent State, its freshman orientation program, Kent State expects to welcome its largest freshman class to the Kent Campus, surpassing its previous freshman enrollment number of 4,030 set in fall 2009.

Weight Loss Improves Memory, According to Kent State Researcher
John Gunstad, an associate professor in Kent State University’s Department of Psychology, and a team of researchers have discovered a link between weight loss and improved memory and concentration. The study shows that bariatric surgery patients exhibited improved memory function 12 weeks after their operations.
